Now, I don't know about you, but I think a sick child needs his/her family close by when they're in the hospital and Ronald McDonald houses help do just that. Fortunately, I've never had to use Ronald McDonald houses, but I know friends that have and I'm happy that it's available for them.
Maybe you've been blessed to NEVER have had a sick child in your life - lucky you! I have. TWO. Our family has been blessed with two cardiac kids (both were born with congenital heart disease) and we have had multiple hospital stays and multiple surgeries and procedures performed at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto. Fortunately, we live close enough to the hospital that it's not a hardship for our family to drive back and forth, but for many families, this isn't possible.
